Mother dear emerged from the kitchen with a frozen Lean Cuisine in her hands. I watched her fidget with it and wondered where this was all going. She opened the box, removed the tray, and peeled the cellophane from the top.
Me: What are you doing?
Mom: I want some ice cream.
Me: That's a chicken and rice Lean Cuisine.
Mom: [Stern and irritated.] I don't know what I'm doing.
Me: Well let's get you some ice cream.
[We go back out to the kitchen and I open the freezer. I point to the half gallon of Pecan Praline ice cream container.]
Me: Here's where the ice cream is.
[I pull it out and set it on the counter to spoon up a dish for her.]
Mom: Don't you have anything smaller? I like those little cups.
[Mom holds up her thumb and index finger signaling about 4 inches.]
Me: Oh, you want pudding.
[I open the refrigerator and point to a pudding cup.]
Mom: Yes. [Smiling.]
