I was sternly told not to let the cat downstairs. Why? "Because she'll get arthritis," mother declared with certainty and a bit of irritation that I could be so uninformed. I hadn't realized that all those cases of feline arthritis, indiscriminately striking down cats across the nation, could be so easily avoided by denying them access to our basement!
I'm sure she was thinking that the basement was cold and damp and arthritis would surely be the result of such exposure, but the conversation still made me laugh. In any case, the cellar is cold and dry as a bone.
