Heavy Macadam
Mom looked at the driveway of our neighbors and took note of the thickness of the "macadam." It struck me that this is a word I don't hear very often, but my parents always used it for what most people call asphalt. I rather like it since it is unusual and expands my vocabulary. The term comes from British surveyor John McAdam (1756-1836) who advocated using the material.
