The Mystery Of The Red Thing

For weeks, my mother has pointed out into the back yard and asked, "What's that red thing way out there?" Each time she asks, I always respond the same way, "It's a beautiful big red flower. It's called a cactus dahlia."

Today, after doing some prep work in the yard for winter, I finally clipped the bloom and presented it to her. She was all smiles, hopped up out of her chair, and filled a fancy glass with water to place it in. It now adorns the end table where she'll be able to enjoy it. I hope it lasts a long time!

I hope the flower last a long long time. I am fortunate that my 86 year old Mother is physically and mentally active. We got her a new red Civic last year and she put 1800 miles on it in a year!still active. She volunteers at a clinic once a week. She has always loved roses and has a flower garden.

Talk soon,
Fred
