I went to see my mother yesterday afternoon and I witnessed my first resident escape!
We were in her room and the alarm sounded. Residents that are prone to wander and not know where they are, like my mom, are fitted with a device on their wrist that looks a bit like a watch. The staff tells the residents it's something to monitor their blood pressure which I think is a pretty clever idea.
I wasn't quite sure what was going on until I saw two of the staff running at full speed down the hall past mom's door. Mom's room is about 1/3 of the way down a wing that has doors at the end for an emergency exit.
By the time I got up to watch the ruckus, the staff were out the door and bringing a confused man back into the facility.
Since they've reported that my mom has done a similar thing on many occasions, it was comforting to see how quickly the staff was on top of the situation.

My mother wore one of those bracelets for several years. I was thankful to know she wasn't wandering down the highway, but saddened that she needed it. Life can be hard.
